The thing that makes MD5 stand out is its groove design. It is considered to be one of the sharpest groove designs on the market. It ensures a satisfactory level of spin. The groove- in- groove technology delivers pretty standard shot-stopping and ensures a clean contact with the golf ball

This wedge has a very sharp leading wedge which may increase the possibility of fat shots. To avoid that, it requires precise striking. Especially if a golfer wants to use it from the sand bunkers or damp turf. Thus, it is not a great fit for beginners as a sand wedge.

2. Callaway PM Grind 19

Callaway PM Grind 19 Review

Callaway PM grind 19 was co-created by Phil Mickelson and Roger Cleveland. It was engineered to make the 3 essential shots more effortless and more effective. They are the knockdown, the hit & check, and Phil’s famous “Phlop” shots. It is a slightly updated form of the first PM grind, which was released in 2015. Grooves across the face and high toe are the same as the previous one.

But it has more offset that helps to lessen the amount of slice or fade. It also offers a higher launch. The toe is a bit higher too. It provides added hitting area and makes flop shots from rough easier. It also adds a spin on lob shots. It is helpful on lobs while playing from the tall grass. This wedge has a loft range from 54° to 64°. All of them come only in C grind sole design. And it comes in different finishes that have a classic and elegant look.

3. Callaway Jaws Full toe

Callaway Jaws Full toe Review

Callaway Jaws full toe is a blend of Jaws MD5 and PM grind. It has the same groove technology as Jaws MD5. But the shape is more triangular. It makes sand and flop shots  easier compared to MD5. The grooves being full-faced and the offset Groove-In-Groove technology is the same as PM grind. The whole toe design with extended grooves helps to grab the ball more easily. The difference is, it has less offset and a straighter leading edge. This makes it easier to strike full shots.

Apart from that, it has a raw face. It rusts with time to offer more spin on partial shots, especially in wet conditions. At the same time, less offset means it is more suited for low handicappers compared to PM grind. But this wedge has fewer loft options which are from 54° to 64°. It is more for being a sand wedge or lob wedge. If you intend to make the same model by buying individuals, then MD5 Jaws is better off.

Things that we liked

  • A combination of the traditional and latest profile
  • Helps to grab the ball more effectively
  • Offers spin control, especially on partial shots
  • Makes it easier to strike full shots
  • Delivers pleasing feel at impact
  • Great for sand and flop shots

Things that can be improved

  • Has a very few loft options
  • It has slightly different looks than traditional wedge may make some golfers uncomfortable
  • Provides less launch angle

Final thoughts

Callaway Jaws full toe makes it easier to grab the ball and control the game even in wet conditions. In addition, it is more suitable for golfers with a low handicap because of the less offset.

4. Callaway Sure Out 2

Callaway Sure Out 2 Wedge Review

Callaway sure out 2 is designed for bunker shots. The enhanced sole, heel relief, and the updated shape make the bunker shots easier for beginners and high handicappers. It has 17 full-face grooves with an aggressive groove pattern. This delivers a fast and shot-stopping spin. Callaway has collaborated with Lamkin for the grip design of this wedge. It has 3 “step down” markings. It helps in the selection of shots and distance control.

The sure out and sure out 2 are almost the same by looks but slightly differ by design. The sure-out 2 design has an enhanced sole and more heel relief. The enhanced sole refines the bounce angle. And the heel relief offers playability in short games by not letting the heel get caught in grass and sand. It makes the club a good choice for a sand wedge. This wedge only has 4 loft options starting from 56° to 64°. Also, it is ideal for full swings because of its higher bounce compared to traditional models.

Things that we liked

  • Makes bunker shots easier
  • Provides fast and shot-stopping spin
  • Helps in shot selection and distance control
  • Delivers refined bounce angle
  • Offers more playability in the short game

Things that can be improved

  • Does not have pitching or gap wedge configurations
  • Not ideal for full swings
  • Not for low handicappers

Final thoughts

Callaway sure out 2 is for beginners or high handicappers to make the bunker shot easier. This wedge also offers better playability in short game situations.

5. Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedge

Callaway Mack Daddy 4 Wedge Review

Callaway Mack Daddy 4 wedge is the one that introduced Callaway’s Groove-in-Groove technology. This technology helps to give more control over the trajectory and spin of shots. It has a lighter shaft to make the swing easier and to provide an enhanced feel. There are 4 grind options to suit different course conditions. The loft options are from 52° to 60°.

The difference between MD5 Jaws and MD4 is in the groove design. Though both have the same groove- in- groove technology, the grooves of MD4 are designed to a wall angle of 5°. Whereas it is 37° for MD5 Jaws. That means MD4 has less groove-edge sharpness. This results in lesser grip and spins from different lies. It is so natural to be that way as MD4 is an older model.

Things that we liked

  • Provides extra spin on full shots
  • The grip is good
  • Offers soft sound and feel
  • Makes it easier to swing
  • It has 4 grind options to fit different golfers and courses

Things that can be improved

  • Most of the loft options are only fit for a sand wedge
  • It may feel too light to some golfers to get comfortable with
  • Less grip and spin than Jaws MD5

Final thoughts

Callaway Mack Daddy 4 offers good grip, spin, and feel at impact. But as it is an older model, this provides less spin and grip on the ball than MD5 Jaws.

6. Callaway Mack Daddy CB

Callaway Mack Daddy CB Review

Callaway Mack daddy CB comes with a cavity back, slightly larger head, and thicker top line. It provides pretty good forgiveness and control over the short game. The forgiveness is impressive in full shots too. The JAWS groove offers a quality grip and spins from all lies. It has a wide range of loft options. On the sand wedge and lob wedge options, the grooves extend across the face. This provides more spin either you are hitting from sand or long grass.

Mack daddy CB is a bit larger than Jaws MD5 in both size and shape. This difference is noticeable but not much. That makes it easier to strike the ball. At the same time, it doesn’t make Mack daddy CB look much chunky. But the feel is not as enhanced as Jaws MD5.

Things that we liked

  • A good choice for mid and high handicappers
  • Offers more consistency around the green
  • Helps to strike the ball easily
  • Provides better control over the short game
  • Offers pretty good forgiveness even on full shots
  • A wide range of loft options are available

Things that can be improved

  • The feel may not be satisfying to some golfers
  • The cavity back design may not look appealing

Final thoughts

Callaway Mack Daddy CB is a worthy choice for mid and high handicappers as it offers impressive forgiveness and control over the short game. It especially makes chipping and pitching easier.

7. Callaway Big Bertha B21

Callaway Big Bertha B21 Review

Callaway Big Bertha B21 is designed for more ball speed, higher launch, and straighter shots. It comes with patented urethane microspheres. It absorbs most of the unwanted vibrations to deliver a good feel at impact. The new Flash Face Cup offers improved ball speed and consistency. The 360 Face Cup of this wedge helps the ball to go a few extra yards.

The thick topline and wider soles make this wedge more forgiving. The offset design helps to lessen the amount of slice and fade balls. It also makes the launch easier. And helps to make straighter shots. It makes the club ideal for more mid to high handicappers for an improved game. But at the same time, the design went a bit chunky to make it more forgiving and confidence-inspiring. This may get uncomfortable for some golfers.

Things that we liked

  • A good fit for senior golfers and mid to high handicappers
  • Offers more forgiveness
  • Helps to make a higher launch
  • Absorbs unwanted vibrations and provides an exceptional feel

Things that can be improved

  • Not designed for low handicappers
  • The chunky design can be uncomfortable sometimes
  • It uses too many technologies to artificially enhance the game that lessens the scope to improve skills

The Groove-in-Groove technology was first introduced in the Callaway MD4 wedge. According to Callaway, this technology makes it easier to control the trajectory and spin of all shots. In this design, the main grooves are horizontally milled and saw-cut. In between these, the milled Micro-Positive grooves are engineered. They are placed in flat parts. It increases surface roughness and grip.

Urethane microspheres

Urethane microspheres

In simple words, urethane microsphere technology helps to deliver a better feel and sound without sacrificing ball speed and distance. This was first introduced in Callaway’s Rogue irons. From then, it is being used in other irons to enhance the game. Here a pocket of specially formulated microsphere-infused urethane is placed behind the clubface. It absorbs unwanted vibrations at impact. That too, without slowing down the face’s speed.

360° face cup

360° face cup

360° face cup offers consistency on approach shots. It was first introduced in 2013. But not in the irons or wedges, instead Callaway Golf’s fairway woods are the clubs where it was first used. This technology mainly increases the flexibility of the clubface. This offers ball speed all across the clubface.

  1. Recently purchased the ST MAX OS iron set w 3 wedges, but no sand wedge? Every course I have ever played have sand traps. A & G wedges are equal in my game, don’t need them, but sand wedge is a must. Why not include a sand wedge instead of 2 less useful wedges? Also can you give me bounce specs on P, A, G & S wedges?

    Reply
    • Hey Ed, The Callaway Rogue ST MAX OS iron set is a good choice. The comparatively larger head of the irons will enhance your game with launch assistance, forgiveness and distance.

Coming to your concern, you probably got the “5-PW, AW, GW” set. It would have been better for you to choose “5-PW, SW”. This set includes an ‘S’ wedge, instead of the ‘A’ and ‘G’ wedges. This set option is usually in the clubs or configuration tab depending on the page design.

And for the bounce specs, it’s mostly different for different sets to maintain the transition.
